Why This Happens in the First Place
Phone screening can only do so much. The goal is to catch obvious disqualifiers early — patients who clearly aren't candidates based on what they share in the call. It works well for clear-cut situations and saves countless patients a ton of time.
Where it falls short is in the gray areas that may need more of a conversation: medication combinations that only become a concern in context, health conditions that are disclosed but not fully understood remotely, or bone loss discovered in a CT scan that turns out to be more significant than anyone realized without imaging.
These are things that genuinely can't be assessed over the phone with full confidence.
That's not a great answer when you've just driven three hours. But it's the honest one — and it's why making your screening call count is worth the effort.
How to Make The Most of Your Screening Call
Think of the screening call as your first line of defense. A good one gives the team enough information to give you an honest answer about whether the trip is worth making. A rushed one doesn't.
Here's what to make sure gets covered:
Walk through your full dental situation. Not just "I'm missing most of my teeth" — be specific. How many teeth are missing? How many are cracked, infected, or failing? Are you currently in dentures? Have you had significant extractions in recent years? The more complete the picture, the better.
Go through your medical history in detail. Conditions that affect healing and surgical safety are relevant here. Don't assume something is too minor to mention — share it and let the team decide. Uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune conditions, a history of cancer treatment, and heart conditions are among the things worth naming specifically.
Share your full medication list. This matters more than most patients expect. Bisphosphonates — medications prescribed for osteoporosis, including brands like Fosamax and Boniva — can affect implant healing. Blood thinners and immunosuppressants may also be important to go over. Include supplements.
Be honest about smoking. Smoking affects healing and implants fusing with bone in ways that matter for candidacy. The screening team needs to know.
Ask directly what would disqualify you. Based on what you've just shared, is there anything that raises a concern? Ask the Nuvia representative.
What Disqualifies Someone — and What Doesn't
Full-arch implants aren't the right fit for every dental situation, and knowing where the lines are helps you go into the conversation with clear expectations.
Situations that typically disqualify:
You're only missing one or two teeth. Full-arch restoration is designed for patients losing most or all of a set of teeth— not for replacing a couple of teeth.
Uncontrolled health conditions. A condition like diabetes doesn't automatically disqualify you, but uncontrolled diabetes does. The key word is uncontrolled — managed conditions are evaluated differently.
Certain medications. Particularly bisphosphonates and some other drugs that affect bone metabolism or healing.
Bone loss beyond what's workable. All-on-4® is specifically designed to accommodate reduced bone levels using angled implants, so this bar is lower than most people think — but there is a floor, and it requires imaging to assess.
Health factors that affect surgical safety. Full-arch dental implants involve general anesthesia and a multi-hour procedure. Your overall health matters for whether or not the procedure is right for you.
Things that don't automatically disqualify you:
Managed diabetes or other chronic conditions
Previous dental work, even extensive work
Age (health is what actually matters)
